The Kremlin announced Friday that US envoy Steve Witkoff has arrived in Russia, according to the official RIA Novosti news agency, amid a rapprochement between Washington and Moscow.
The agency quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying: " Yes, I confirm that he (Witkoff) has arrived in Russia. " adding that Moscow will announce later whether a meeting is planned between the two sides.
Witkoff has already met twice with President Vladimir Putin in Russia since his return. Donald Trump to the White House.
The visit comes a day after a prisoner exchange between the two countries, as the two powers seek to improve relations that have fallen to their lowest level since the Cold War, following Moscow's military offensive in Ukraine.
Trump is pushing to end the more than three-year-old war in Ukraine, but he has recently expressed frustration with Russian and Ukrainian presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he accuses of blocking potential peace agreements.
Trump said he was "frustrated and unhappy" with his Russian counterpart, particularly after the latter raised the idea of a "transitional administration" in Ukraine without Zelensky as part of a peace agreement.
Witkoff, a close Trump ally and former real estate partner, praised Putin in an interview after their second meeting in March.
He said Putin was a great leader and not a bad man.
