Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will face Councilwoman Nithya Raman in the November runoff election. According to the latest counts released Monday evening by Los Angeles County, based on 92% of ballots counted, the liberal candidate has garnered 28,5% of the vote. She is ahead of Republican Spencer Pratt, who has 25,8% of the vote and whom several American media outlets, including CNN and NBC News, have now declared eliminated. This result represents a resounding defeat for the conservative camp in a city and state largely controlled by Democrats.

Nithya Raman, a member of the City Council, had initially supported Karen Bass before breaking away to run her own campaign. Her unexpected qualification for the second round has shaken up the local political landscape and reflects a shift to the left of the Democratic Party. Spencer Pratt, however, had the support of Donald Trump, but this endorsement was not enough to mobilize the Republican electorate in a metropolis won over by the Democrats.
The left-wing candidate claimed victory as soon as the first provisional results were announced. The November election will therefore pit two Democratic candidates with distinct political leanings against each other, ruling out any possibility of a Republican victory in the leadership of the second-largest city in the United States. Karen Bass will attempt to retain her seat against an opponent representing the progressive wing of the party.
