Yoshiki, a major figure in Japanese rock and co-founder of the band X Japan, has pledged to donate 50,000 euros to the French Red Cross to help the victims of the fires. The musician describes Europe, and France in particular, as a "second homeland."
In total, his foundation is to distribute €100,000 between the French and Spanish Red Cross societies. Yoshiki hopes to support residents who lost their homes as well as the emergency services mobilized to fight the fires. In the Gironde region, nearly 42,000 hectares burned and approximately 224,000 people had to be displaced at the height of the crisis.
Artists are mobilizing to help the disaster victims
Guillaume Canet, himself preemptively evacuated from his home in Cap-Ferret, also called on the public to support the Red Cross, the Fondation de France, and Secours Populaire. A charity concert featuring Pascal Obispo, Zazie, and Renaud is also planned for Bordeaux at the end of August, with a broadcast on M6.
Based in Los Angeles, Yoshiki regularly engages in philanthropic activities through his foundation. He notably donated $500,000 after the California wildfires and sold his piano to benefit the victims of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The musician also plans to provide similar aid in Japan following the earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 29.
