Mexican influencer César Gastelum was shot dead Tuesday night while live-streaming on TikTok outside a restaurant in Culiacán, Sinaloa. Followed by more than 500,000 people, the young man, around 25 years old, was with two friends and participating in a challenge in which all three had dressed up as food delivery drivers.
During the live stream, two individuals on a motorcycle pulled up alongside them. One of them shot César Gastelum before fleeing. The live stream was immediately cut off and the footage was subsequently removed from TikTok, but excerpts of the attack were saved and shared by several news sites.
A series of murders targeting influencers
Initial reports from the police indicated the death of a delivery driver. However, recordings and witness statements gathered at the scene allowed for the victim's identification. Military personnel, police officers, and forensic experts were deployed to the busy commercial area, located near the Sinaloa prosecutor's office.
No evidence has yet emerged to establish a motive for the murder. Culiacán, however, remains marked by internal conflicts within a powerful local cartel. According to the Mexican press, about ten influencers, some suspected of having ties to criminal groups, have been murdered in recent years in the state of Sinaloa.
