US Vice President JD Vance said the UK had been "abandoned by its leaders for too long," saying he hoped the next Prime Minister would be able to meet voters' expectations for change.
In an interview with Sunday TimesVance argued that the rapid turnover of British prime ministers was a symptom of deeper political problems. Following Keir Starmer's resignation, the UK is about to have its seventh prime minister in a decade. Andy Burnham is considered the frontrunner to succeed him.
"The UK is an extraordinary country, but it has been neglected by its leaders for too long," said Vance, adding that he hoped the future head of government would implement the structural changes demanded by the people.
Despite his criticism of the British political class, the US Vice President reaffirmed his commitment to the special relationship between Washington and London. He emphasized his affection for the United Kingdom and assured that the United States would continue to work closely with the next British government, whoever it might be.
