Israel strikes Iranian petrochemical plant despite Trump's calls for calm

Israel launched new strikes against Iran overnight Sunday to Monday, targeting a major petrochemical facility in the southwest of the country as well as several military objectives. This operation comes despite criticism from the US president. Donald Trump and in a context of high tensions between the two countries.

According to Israeli authorities, the strikes targeted the Mahshahr petrochemical complex, marking the first attack on Iranian energy infrastructure since the previous ceasefire agreement between the two sides. Other military sites were also reportedly targeted.

These new operations come after a series of Iranian missile launches against Israel. The clashes between the two countries continue to fuel international concerns about the risk of a broader regional escalation.

On Tehran's side, Iranian officials are maintaining their main demands for any diplomatic progress. These include the lifting of economic sanctions against the country and the return of Iranian assets frozen abroad.

Iran also demands recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a significant portion of the world's oil and gas trade passes. This claim remains one of the main points of contention in regional discussions.

While diplomatic efforts continue to avert a widespread resumption of hostilities, the latest Israeli strikes underscore the fragility of the situation. Military exchanges between Israel and Iran continue to undermine prospects for de-escalation in a region already plagued by multiple security crises.
