Bolsonaro asks the courts for permission to receive a visit from a Trump advisor in prison

Lawyers for former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro have asked Brazil's Supreme Court to allow Darren Beattie, recently chosen by the US president's administration, to visit him in prison. Donald Trump to occupy a position as advisor in charge of overseeing relations with Brazil.

According to a court document published Tuesday, Bolsonaro's defense team wants this meeting to be authorized under the rules governing visits in detention.

Darren Beattie, known for his conservative views, was recently appointed by the Trump administration to a senior advisory position focused on relations with Brazil. The request for a visit underscores the close political ties that exist between certain officials close to Donald Trump and the former Brazilian president.

Jair Bolsonaro, who led Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is currently being held in connection with legal proceedings related to several investigations opened after he left office.

The Supreme Court must now examine the request from his lawyers and decide whether this visit can take place in compliance with the applicable detention rules.
