Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated on Wednesday that his American counterpart, Donald Trump, had the right to have a political preference in Brazil, but asked him not to interfere in the presidential election scheduled for October.
"He may have his preference, but he must stay out of the Brazilian elections," Lula said in a statement reported by Reuters.
The Brazilian president has confirmed his intention to run for another term. His main rival in the polls is currently Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
This warning comes after comments made by Trump on Wednesday on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, in which he said that Brazil had become "a little difficult" and "politically dangerous".
The Brazilian presidential election in October is being closely watched by international observers, against a backdrop of strong political polarization between supporters of Lula and those of the Bolsonaro family. Relations between Brasilia and Washington could also become a campaign issue if statements by foreign officials continue to fuel the political debate in Brazil.
