During his concert in Philadelphia, British singer Ed Sheeran publicly took a stand on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, describing the war waged by Israel in Gaza as « catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate. » An unprecedented break of silence, occurring amid controversy surrounding the removal of rapper Macklemore from his tour.

Usually an artist careful to keep politics away from his concerts, he surprised his audience Saturday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Ed Sheeran, one of the most popular figures in British pop, chose this first stage appearance since the outbreak of a heated controversy to speak out on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, breaking with the apolitical stance he had claimed until now.

The singer described the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which cost about 1,200 lives and led to the taking of dozens of hostages, as « horrible. » He then described the war Israel is waging in Gaza, with a death toll now exceeding 70,000, as « catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate. » He also denounced what he called a « systemic injustice » in the occupied West Bank, where the Israeli government continues expanding Jewish settlements, which the UN has described as a « flagrant violation of international law. »

« I don’t want to disappoint my fans, and I never wanted to be a political musician, but all this has placed me at the center of an important and passionate debate about freedom of expression and the most complex political issue on the planet, » he said from the stage. He also acknowledged having made mistakes in handling the situation, offering apologies to the audience.

These statements contrast with his earlier position on Instagram, where he had stated that his concerts were not intended to become a « political forum. »

The crisis erupted in early September when American rapper Macklemore shouted « Free Palestine » during the first concert of the American Loop Tour in New Jersey. He was removed from the rest of the tour. Ed Sheeran denied direct responsibility, citing threats from some venues to cancel shows if Macklemore remained on the bill. The rapper publicly stated that billionaire Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, demanded his exclusion.

Macklemore’s removal sparked a solidarity movement among the tour artists. Musician Finneas, Danish band Lukas Graham, Irish singer Aaron Rowe, and Ed Sheeran’s backing band all announced their withdrawal, leaving one of the world’s best-selling artists without an opening act.

Before the Philadelphia concert, dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters peacefully gathered their flags and slogans outside the stadium. Among them, 18-year-old Brandon Ateke explained he gave up attending the show to join the rally, denouncing what he perceives as the singer’s « complicity » with those who silenced Macklemore. The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel also calls for a boycott of Ed Sheeran’s world tour.
