Italy (Italian: Italia /iˈtaːlja/), officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica Italiana /reˈpubblika itaˈljaːna/), is a sovereign state in Southern Europe. Its territory comprises a mainland portion, a peninsula located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, and an insular portion consisting of the two largest islands in this sea, Sicily and Sardinia, and other smaller islands. It is connected to the rest of the continent by the Alps mountain range. The Italian territory roughly corresponds to the geographical region of the same name. The country shares land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, as well as internal borders with San Marino and Vatican City. As of 2024, Italy had a population of 58,989,749 and an area of 302,073 km².
Italy is the cradle of Roman civilization, which had a major influence on law and architecture. Italy made a fundamental contribution to Western civilization, notably as the birthplace of Etruscan civilization, Magna Graecia, the Roman Empire, the Holy See, the maritime republics, humanism, and the Renaissance. Existing as a unitary state since 1861 following the Risorgimento (Renaissance or Resurrection) led by the Kingdom of Sardinia, Italy has been a parliamentary republic since the abolition of the Italian monarchy by referendum in 1946.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Italy is the eighth largest economy in the world and the third largest economy in the Eurozone. It is a founding member of the Council of Europe, the UN, the European Union, the Latin Union, NATO, the OECD, the G7 and the WTO.
