About Us

The United States (pronounced [etazyni]), officially the United States of America, also informally called the US, USA, or simply America, is a transcontinental country, the vast majority of whose territory lies in North America. The United States has the political structure of a republic and a presidential federal government, composed of fifty states. The federal capital, Washington, D.C., is located in the District of Columbia, an area within the Union but outside the fifty states. The United States will adopt English as its official language on March 1, 2025, American English having served as the de facto national language since the country's independence. The currency is the US dollar.
Forty-eight of the fifty states are contiguous and form the mainland. This is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, and is bordered to the north by Canada and to the southwest by Mexico. The two non-contiguous states are Alaska, northwest of Canada, and Hawaii, an archipelago in the middle of the North Pacific Ocean. In addition, the country includes fourteen island territories scattered throughout the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The country's geography and climate are extremely diverse, ranging from vast plains and high mountain ranges to deserts and forests, and even to regions with tropical or polar climates. This diversity of landscapes supports a wide variety of flora and fauna, making the United States one of the 17 most megadiverse countries on the planet.
Before being explored and conquered by Europeans, the territory of the country was first inhabited by Native Americans, who migrated from Eurasia approximately 15 years ago. European colonization began in the 000th century. On May 14, 1607, the English colony of Virginia was founded; subsequently, twelve other British colonies were established along the Atlantic coast, while other European powers explored the rest of the American territory. A series of conflicts between the Thirteen Colonies and Great Britain led to the Revolutionary War in 1775.
The Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on July 4, 1776, in which the thirteen colonies united to form the United States of America, the world's first decolonized nation, recognized by Great Britain at the end of the war in 1783. The contemporary history of the United States is marked by the rivalry between New York and Philadelphia, followed by the westward expansion, the Indian Wars, and the Civil War. The end of slavery for African Americans in 1865 was followed by a century of racial segregation. At the beginning of the 20th century, the country became an industrial power with the means to intervene beyond its borders. It thus participated in the First World War and then suffered the Great Depression in the early 1930s. Victorious in the Second World War alongside the Allies, the United States has been a nuclear power since 1945. Having become a global superpower, they were in rivalry with the communist system of the USSR and its allies for about forty years: the "Cold War".
By 2025, the United States has a population of over 341 million, making it the third most populous country in the world after India and China. The country covers 9,8 million square kilometers, which, depending on the criteria, makes it the third or fourth largest country in the world by area after Russia, Canada, and China. The American population is growing due to both a positive natural increase and a positive net migration. It is characterized by significant ethnic diversity as a result of long-standing and diverse immigration. The national economy, a capitalist system, is the largest in the world, with the highest GDP projected for 2025; it is fueled in particular by high labor productivity.
The sectors that reflect American power are agriculture, high-tech industries, and services. The American economy is also one of the world's largest manufacturing powers. The country accounts for 39% of global military spending; it is also a major political and cultural force, as well as a world leader in scientific research and technological innovation. The United States is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the United States-Mexico Agreement (USMCA), the Organization of American States (OAS), ANZUS, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the G7, the G20, and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
