Russian political officials have strongly criticized the American operation carried out in Venezuela, calling it illegal and destabilizing. The Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, as well as a senior parliamentary official, stated that the actions of US President Donald Trump represented a brutal demonstration of Washington’s interests in Latin America.
These reactions come after Donald Trump announced that the United States had struck Venezuela and captured President Nicolas Maduro along with his wife, before taking them out of the country. This operation caused an international shockwave and led to calls for urgent discussions at the United Nations.
In remarks reported by the Russian agency TASS, Dmitry Medvedev judged the behavior of the US president as clearly contrary to international law, while describing it as consistent from the perspective of American national interests. “Despite the obvious illegality of these actions, one cannot deny a certain consistency: Trump and his team firmly defend their country’s interests,” he said.
Medvedev also stated that Latin America is perceived by Washington as its “backyard,” implying that the main objective of the operation was related to controlling Venezuelan energy resources. According to him, an action of this nature carried out against a more powerful state would be considered an act of war.
Alexey Pushkov, a Russian senator and chairman of a Federation Council commission, for his part questioned the real effectiveness of the American operation. While acknowledging the spectacular impact of Donald Trump’s statements and actions, he considered that their concrete results remain uncertain.
Comparing the situation to what he described as premature victory declarations by the United States in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, Pushkov warned that initial “triumphs” could turn into lasting crises. According to him, the attack on Venezuela and the capture of its president violated international norms and revived a logic of “wild imperialism” reminiscent of the 19th century.
Russia has long maintained close relations with Venezuela, notably in the fields of energy and military cooperation. Moscow has diplomatically supported Caracas for several years and considers the American intervention an additional threat to international stability.
