After four weeks of operation marked by a series of records, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to dethrone Titanic among the top five biggest box office successes of all time worldwide, just a few tens of millions of dollars shy of its total.
$44 million separates the two films
On Monday, the Marvel Studios film had grossed $2,22 billion worldwide, climbing to sixth place in the all-time rankings after recently surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was then just $44 million short of reaching the $2,264 billion mark accumulated by James Cameron's film between its initial release in 1997 and its various 3D re-releases. Boosted by a fourth weekend with $109 million in worldwide revenue, including $39 million in the United States, the film also surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the second highest-grossing film in the history of the American domestic box office, with $854,9 million in earnings.
A trajectory that now aims for Ne Zha 2
Once Titanic is surpassed, Spider-Man: Brand New Day's next target will be Ne Zha 2, the Chinese animated film that grossed $2,27 billion worldwide upon its release last year. According to industry analysts' projections, Destin Daniel Cretton's film should ultimately finish its run with around $2,45 billion in worldwide box office receipts. Only Avatar, with $2,9 billion including its re-releases, and Avengers: Endgame, at $2,79 billion, are expected to continue surpassing the new blockbuster starring Tom Holland and Zendaya at the top of the all-time rankings.
