Puy-de-Dôme: A runner dies after collapsing during a trail race

A 49-year-old man died on Saturday, December 20, after suffering a heart attack while participating in the Mozac Christmas trail race in the Puy-de-Dôme region. The tragedy occurred in the early afternoon on the race course, near Volvic, during the event called "À l'assaut de Tournoël" (Assault on Tournoël).

Rescue efforts delayed due to difficult access to the site

According to initial reports, the runner was immediately attended to by other participants, who alerted emergency services around 14:30 p.m. and attempted to resuscitate him for an extended period. The incident occurred in a steep, wooded area, complicating the rescue efforts, which were only able to reach the victim in the mid-afternoon.

Upon arrival, firefighters provided medical attention to the athlete, whose condition was critical, before airlifting him to the Gabriel-Montpied University Hospital in Clermont-Ferrand. Despite their efforts, the man died a few hours later at the hospital. The exact circumstances of his collapse are not yet known.
