The race to succeed Antonio Guterres is on. Six candidates, four women and two men, are vying for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. On Thursday, July 23, they participated in a debate in the General Assembly Hall in New York, the first step in what promises to be a delicate process.

Restore the institution's credibility

All emphasized the need to restore the institution's credibility. This is a central issue as the UN faces a period of questioning regarding its effectiveness and authority on the international stage. The candidates defended their respective visions before an attentive audience, aware that the weight of this responsibility extends far beyond purely diplomatic functions.

The formal selection process will begin in one week. Member states will then have to decide on the person who will represent the organization for the coming years, in a global context marked by multiple tensions and crises that continue to accumulate.
