Google is preparing to take another step in the evolution of its mapping application. In the coming weeks, Google Maps will welcome Gemini, the generative artificial intelligence developed by the American giant. The goal: to transform the service into a true route assistant, more interactive, more contextual, and more intuitive. According to information released by the company to The VergeGemini will replace the current voice assistant in all countries where AI is already available. With a simple "OK Google" command, users will be able to change a route, get information about a destination, or even ask questions unrelated to driving, such as game scores or the latest news.
A road co-pilot with extended capabilities
Google wants to make Gemini a travel companion capable of combining geospatial data from Maps, community reviews, and information from the web. "It's like having a local friend in the passenger seat," summarizes a project manager. The application will also allow users to report traffic jams or accidents with simple voice commands, formulated in natural language. Another major new feature is contextual guidance. Rather than simply saying "turn right in 200 meters," Gemini could analyze Street View images to provide visual directions like "turn after the Chinese restaurant." This feature, initially tested in the United States, could be gradually rolled out to other regions.
AI connected to reality
Google promises that Gemini will rely on verified data from its own databases rather than free internet browsing, in order to limit errors or the infamous "hallucinations" of AI. Gemini's integration with Google Maps will be available on Android and iOS, provided you have an active Google account. A version adapted for Android Auto will follow later. With this update, Google aims to make its flagship application much more than just a GPS: an intelligent co-pilot, capable of assisting drivers in every aspect of their journey.
