Olympique Lyonnais will not participate in the Champions League group stage. After a 1-1 draw in Turkey in the first leg, Lyon were defeated 2-1 by Fenerbahçe on Wednesday evening at the Groupama Stadium in the second leg of their playoff. Trailing 2-0 from the 28th minute after goals from Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown, OL pulled one back through Malick Fofana on the hour mark, but were unable to force extra time. Fenerbahçe thus won 3-2 on aggregate and secured their qualification. For Lyon, who had hoped to return to Europe's premier club competition after several years' absence, the evening ended with a particularly painful elimination on home soil.
Muriqi strikes first, Brown knocks Lyon out four minutes later
Everything happened very quickly during a first half that proved particularly difficult for Lyon. Lyon immediately tried to respond. From a set piece, Muriqi almost scored an own goal, but the post saved Fenerbahçe. Lyon created several chances but couldn't beat Ederson. Malick Fofana gives hope to an entire stadium

The Lyon striker scored with his left foot, pulling his team back to 2-1. The Groupama Stadium crowd began to believe in a comeback. A second Lyon goal would level the score at 3-3 on aggregate and force extra time. Lyon had half an hour left to secure their place in the Champions League.
Lyon pushes to the end, Fenerbahçe resists
Lyon increased the pressure in the final stages of the match. Fofana remained one of their most dangerous players, while Loïs Openda also looked for an opening. But Fenerbahçe held firm. The Turkish side accepted the increased pressure and protected their lead. Lyon regained possession and launched numerous attacks, but failed to score the second goal that had become essential. Even the final minutes and added time changed nothing. In the 95th minute, OL were awarded a last-gasp free kick, about 25 meters from goal and slightly to the right. Fenerbahçe resisted one last time. After seven minutes of added time, the referee blew the final whistle.
Fenerbahçe qualifies, Lyon misses out on Champions League football
