EPISODE 4 – THE ACTORS (1/2)
Alain Delon – Died in 2024 (aged 88) – Private chapel in Douchy (45), alongside his 35 dogs
Alain Delon died on August 18, 2024, at the age of 88, at his home in Douchy-Montcorbon (Loiret), from complications of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. His passing prompted a flood of tributes in France and internationally. Respecting his wishes, Alain Delon declined any national tribute. He was buried on August 24, 2024, in a private chapel on his estate, La Brûlerie, surrounded by his 35 dogs. Around fifty guests, including his three children, attended the ceremony officiated by Jean-Michel Di Falco.
As a reminder, burial on private land in France is possible but rare, requiring advance planning. Alain Delon submitted his request as early as 2015, receiving a preliminary approval, pending confirmation from his family. Only a few burials of this type are granted each year, as was the case for Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.
For such a burial to be authorized, three conditions must be met: the property must be located outside an urban area, a hydrogeologist's opinion must be obtained to avoid any soil pollution, and the prefect must validate these conditions.
In the event of the sale of the land, the burial site remains accessible to descendants, creating a perpetual easement: the new owners must allow the heirs to visit the grave. For Alain Delon's grave, access for admirers will now depend on the decision of his family.
Jean-Paul Belmondo – Died in 2021 (aged 88) – Ashes scattered in the garden of his childhood home, Piriac-sur-Mer (44)
Jean-Paul Belmondo died on September 6, 2021, at his home in Paris, at the age of 88. A national tribute was held on September 9 in the courtyard of Les Invalides, attended by elected officials, actors, and musicians. President Macron delivered the eulogy, while thousands of French citizens filed past the coffin to pay their respects, accompanied by the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, and Ennio Morricone's " Chi Mai ," the famous soundtrack from the film *Le Professionnel *.
The following day, the funeral was held at the Saint-Germain-des-Prés church, attended by family and close friends, as well as other leading figures of French cinema such as Alain Delon, Pierre Richard, and Claude Lelouch. After the religious ceremony, Jean-Paul Belmondo was cremated at the Père-Lachaise cemetery crematorium, and his ashes were then scattered in the garden of his childhood home in Piriac-sur-Mer, Loire-Atlantique.
Mireille Darc Died in 2017 (aged 79) – Montparnasse Cemetery, Paris (75)
Having suffered two strokes in 2016, Mireille Darc had been afflicted with valvular heart disease since childhood. She underwent heart surgery in 1980 (performed by Professor Christian Cabrol) and again in 2013, in complete secrecy. She suffered a third stroke during the night of September 28-29, 2016. Mireille Darc finally died at her home on August 28, 2017, at 1:50 a.m. The funeral service, presided over by Bishop Di Falco, took place on Friday, September 1, 2017 , at the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, attended by more than 1.000 people: public figures, family, friends, and anonymous admirers who accepted the invitation of her husband, Pascal Desprez. He attended the funeral alongside Mireille Darc's former partner, Alain Delon. Mireille Darc's burial then took place at the Montparnasse cemetery (11th division), where she rests.
Louis de Funes Died in 1983 (aged 68) – Cellier Cemetery, Loire-Atlantique (44)
In December 1982, Louis de Funes He went to the mountains with his family for a few days, but the altitude made him very tired, and he had to return to Le Cellier. On the evening of January 27, 1983, he went to bed extremely tired. In reality, he had suffered a heart attack and was rushed by ambulance to the University Hospital of Nantes, where he died at 20:30 p.m. All the media outlets then ran front-page stories on what was perceived as a national tragedy. Although the funeral was planned to be "strictly private," more than 3.000 people were present in the packed Saint-Martin Church in Le Cellier, including some of his former co-stars such as Jean Carmet, Michel Galabru, and Colette Brosset, the composer Raymond Lefebvre, as well as prominent figures like Anne-Aymone Giscard d'Estaing, wife of the former President of the Republic. He was buried in the cemetery of Le Cellier, near Nantes, on January 29, 1983.
Bourvil Died in 1970 (aged 53) – Montainville Cemetery,Yvelines (78)
During the filming of cracks, in 1967, Bourvil He had a serious fall from his bicycle. Hospitalized, he took the opportunity to have a simple cyst removed from his ear, which had been bothering him for two years. The surgeon then took a biopsy and diagnosed bone marrow cancer. Bourvil decided not to tell his colleagues, but rumors of his cancer spread. His days were numbered, even though he was at the height of his fame. To try to prove his good health, he agreed to play the lead role in The Stallion, a film shot in 16 days using daily contracts, as insurance companies only covered 17 days (director Jean-Pierre Mocky had him shave his head to conceal his alopecia, a side effect of chemotherapy). His last film shoot, The Atlantic WallIt was a harrowing experience, the actor suffering greatly. After a long illness, Bourvil died at the age of 53 on September 23, 1970, surrounded by his family in his Parisian apartment on Boulevard Suchet. He is buried in Montainville (Yvelines), the village where he had his country house.
Michel Galabru Died in 2016 (aged 93) – Montmartre Cemetery, Paris (75)
The unforgettable partner of Louis de Funès in the Gendarme of Saint-Tropez saga , Michel Galabru confessed to having always suffered from the image of a clown, good only for entertaining the masses, that people had projected onto him since childhood. Yet this image ultimately made him a legend. Michel Galabru died on January 4, 2016, in his sleep, at the age of 93. His funeral was held on January 12, 2016, at the Church of Saint-Roch in Paris. He is buried in Montmartre Cemetery, in division 32.
Yves Montand Died in 1991 (aged 70) – Père-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris (75)
On November 9, 1991, at 13:50 p.m., Yves Montand died of a myocardial infarction at the age of 70, the day after the last day of filming for Jean-Jacques Beineix's film IP5 , at the end of which his character also dies of a heart attack! The actor had hoped to return to the Bercy stage in the spring of 1992. For the needs of the script, protected by a wetsuit under his clothes, he had gone swimming in late September in an icy lake in the Commelles ponds in the Chantilly forest, near Senlis. After filming a final scene, Montand felt unwell and told one of the paramedics: "With everything I've experienced, I've had such a wonderful life that I won't regret leaving . " He died at the hospital in Senlis and was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery alongside Simone Signoret, the only woman he was married to.
Michel serrault Died in 2007 (aged 79) – Old Cemetery of Neuilly, Hauts-de-Seine (92)
Unforgettable as Zaza Napoli in *La Cage aux Folles *, Michel Serrault died at his home, Val la Reine, in Vasouy, on July 29, 2007, at the age of 79, from cancer. He had been suffering for several years from a rare disease, relapsing polychondritis (which explained the deformity of his nose). On August 2, 2007, many friends from the film world and a few officials attended his funeral at the Sainte-Catherine Church in Honfleur, near his secondary residence. He was buried in the adjacent cemetery before his remains were transferred in 2009 to the old cemetery in Neuilly-sur-Seine, where he had his primary residence, to be laid to rest alongside his wife and daughter.
Jean Rochefort Died in 2017 (aged 87) – Grosrouvre Cemetery, Yvelines (78)
In August 2016, Jean Rochefort was hospitalized in Paris for abdominal pain, which foreshadowed serious illness. Diagnosed with cancer, he died in Paris on October 9, 2017, at the age of 87, while hospitalized at Saint-Joseph Hospital. His funeral was held on October 13, 2017, at the Church of Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin. He was buried in the Grosrouvre Cemetery in the Yvelines department. His grave was very private.
Guillaume Depardieu Died in 2008 (aged 37) – Bougival Cemetery, Yvelines (78)
While filming Alex Iordăchescu's * L'Enfance d'Icare* (The Childhood of Icarus) in Romania for several weeks, alongside Alysson Paradis, Guillaume Depardieu contracted pneumonia and a new infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which required his repatriation to the hospital in Garches. He died there on October 13, 2008, three days after contracting the illness. He is buried in the Bougival cemetery.
Jacques Villeret Died in 2005 (aged 53) – Perrusson Cemetery, Indre et Loire (37)
For many, Jacques Villeret is the unforgettable François Pignon from *Le Dîner de cons* (The Dinner Game ). But the actor also appeared in many other cult films, such as * La Soupe aux choux* (Cabbage Soup ) and *Papy fait de la résistance* (Grandpa's in the Resistance ). He died in Évreux on January 28, 2005, from an internal hemorrhage related to liver disease. He is buried in Perrusson, next to his mother.
