Paul de Saint-Sernin revealed on Wednesday that he had undergone heart surgery. The 34-year-old comedian, known for his appearances on the French television program " Quelle époque!" on France 2, spoke out a few hours after his operation, directly from his hospital bed. The procedure went well, and he quickly reassured those who were worried about him.
The comedian, who had already humorously mentioned his upcoming operation a few days earlier, recounted his time in the operating room and, above all, paid tribute to the medical teams who took care of him.
"I just had heart surgery."
Paul de Saint-Sernin appears smiling but still hospitalized in the video posted on his social media. He begins by stating very directly the reason for his presence in the hospital: "I just had heart surgery."
He then recounts his arrival in the operating room, surrounded by medical equipment, doctors, nurses, and anesthesiologist. An impressive situation which he describes with his usual humor, notably comparing the atmosphere to that of the series Grey's Anatomy.
The procedure was performed via an incision through the thigh, working its way up to the heart. The comedian recounts joking with the medical staff during the procedure, despite its technical nature.
"It's still a crazy job."
Beyond his surgery, Paul de Saint-Sernin primarily wanted to use his video to pay tribute to the hospital staff. He was particularly moved by the presence and calm of the healthcare workers.
“It’s still an insane job,” he explains, recounting how he saw the teams working around him while managing to put him at ease. He also emphasizes their constant presence with the patients, including during the night.
This experience gave him a concrete understanding of their working conditions: "I'm stating the obvious, but you realize that hospital staff need to be treated with even more consideration and that hospitals need more funding."
Paul de Saint-Sernin criticizes the priorities of the public debate
The comedian also used his message to make a political comment on the issues currently dominating public debate. "For the past three weeks, I've been turning on my TV, and the debates are all about explaining how we should dress in the street, but we should be asking ourselves how we can better support hospital staff and give hospitals some money ," he said.
Paul de Saint-Sernin, known for his incisive remarks on Quelle époque!, had notably made headlines during his particularly tense exchange with Nicolas Bedos on France 2.
He had also made numerous jokes in his program Dans la sauce , notably with a notable remark aimed at Patrick Bruel.
"Everything's fine! I'll be playing football again in 10 days."
His announcement quickly sparked concern, so Paul de Saint-Sernin later clarified his health. "Sorry, the intention wasn't to alarm anyone, everything is fine! I'll be back playing football in 10 days."
He explains that his video was primarily intended to share a personal moment and to highlight the professionals who treated him: "The goal was to make a spontaneous (perhaps a little too spontaneous?) and intimate (probably too intimate) video to shine a light on those who truly deserve it."
A big football fan, Paul de Saint-Sernin had also participated this year in the Heroes' Match organized for the benefit of the Institute of Myology , alongside Eden Hazard, Javier Pastore, Robert Pirès and Paul Mirabel.
According to the man himself, his operation should therefore only keep him away from the field very briefly. Above all, Paul de Saint-Sernin chose the first few hours after his surgery to send a heartfelt message to the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who supported him.
