Stan Douglas at the Jeu de Paume for an exceptional retrospective

From October 20, 2026, to January 10, 2027, the Jeu de Paume will dedicate a major exhibition to the Canadian artist Stan Douglas. Entitled Parallax , this retrospective will bring together some forty works and will be the most significant monographic exhibition devoted to the artist in France in over thirty years. Co-produced with the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), it will trace nearly forty years of creative output through video installations, films, and photographic series.

A work that questions images and history

Born in Vancouver in 1960, Stan Douglas has been developing a practice since the late 1980s that blends photography, film, and visual arts. His works explore how images contribute to the construction of our collective memory and influence our understanding of history. Drawing on real events or specific historical contexts, he brings to light forgotten narratives, minority perspectives, and the mechanisms that shape our perception of the past.

The exhibition's title refers to the phenomenon of parallax, which describes the change in an object's apparent position depending on the viewing angle. This concept encapsulates the artist's approach: demonstrating that no perspective is entirely objective and that all representation depends on the point of view adopted. Through this exhibition, visitors will discover how Stan Douglas explores the connections between image, memory, and power by offering a multifaceted interpretation of history.

More than 40 creations brought together

The exhibition will bring together around forty creations made between the late 1980s and today. Films, immersive installations and photographs will allow us to understand the evolution of his work, while highlighting the themes that run through it: social changes, image technologies, historical narratives and the challenges of representation.

After its run at the Jeu de Paume, Parallax will continue its tour at the MACBA in Barcelona in 2027. This event promises to be one of the major highlights of the Parisian cultural season, offering the French public the opportunity to rediscover an artist whose work occupies an essential place on the international contemporary art scene.
