M6 and RTL will broadcast a major concert on Thursday, August 27th, during prime time, to raise funds for the victims of the fires that ravaged the Gironde region and several other departments. The project was launched urgently by Julien Courbet, Pascal Obispo, and Éric Jean-Jean, all of whom have a strong connection to the Bordeaux region. The event will bring together several leading figures in French music to support a national fundraising appeal. Pascal Obispo will be a central figure in the program. Zazie, Julien Clerc, Renaud, Gaëtan Roussel, and Gauvain Sers have also confirmed their participation. Other artists may still be added to the lineup, as several details of the evening are still being finalized.
Donations for disaster victims and affected professionals
A fundraising appeal will be held throughout the evening. The funds raised will support residents who have lost their homes or belongings, as well as those whose livelihoods have been destroyed or severely impacted by the fires. Aid will not be limited to those affected in the Gironde department. Organizers also wish to support victims of fires in other French departments. The precise collection procedures, the organizations responsible for distributing the donations, and the final list of beneficiaries are yet to be announced.
A private initiative launched in haste
Julien Courbet describes this mobilization as a private initiative, organized quickly without initial support from municipalities or local authorities. The television host was with his family in Lège-Cap-Ferret when he discovered a huge cloud of smoke and piles of ash. He had left the town on July 23, the day after the fire started in the Saumos area. This personal experience contributed to the creation of the concert. Julien Courbet, Pascal Obispo, and Éric Jean-Jean then approached artists and broadcasters to put together this event on a very short notice.
42,000 hectares of forest ravaged by flames
The fire that started in Saumos on July 22nd burned through approximately 42,000 hectares of forest. It is one of the largest fires ever recorded in the region. At the height of the crisis, nearly 220,000 people were preventively evacuated from more than 20 municipalities. Authorities intensified their evacuation operations in response to the rapid spread of the flames and the significant smoke. The provisional assessment indicates that nearly 300 buildings were destroyed, burned, or damaged. Homes, businesses, and equipment were affected, leaving many residents in a difficult financial situation.
