Fuel, debt, pensions: Roland Lescure's announcements for the start of the new academic year

Appearing on BFMTV-RMC this Monday morning, Economy Minister Roland Lescure addressed several sensitive issues for the start of the new term. Fuel subsidies, the 2027 budget, pensions, public debt, and tax fraud: the government promised new announcements while defending its economic policy.

With one week to go before the end of the fuel subsidy for high-mileage drivers, Roland Lescure left the door open to an extension or a new program. "We're working on it," he assured, noting that oil, gas, and gasoline prices at the pump remain high. The minister promised a decision "by the end of the month."

"We will do everything" to get the budget adopted

Regarding the 2027 budget, Roland Lescure asserted that the government "will do everything" to secure its adoption despite threats of censure from La France Insoumise. He also ruled out a reduction in pension amounts, while warning that budgetary efforts will have to be shared between the state, businesses, households, and healthcare spending.

The Economy Minister also strongly criticized Jean-Luc Mélenchon 's proposal to cancel part of the public debt held by the Bank of France. He called it a "false good idea," which would be "illegal" and could lead to a rise in interest rates, or even a "guaranteed financial crisis."

Finally, Roland Lescure addressed the hacking that affected the Directorate General of Public Finances and nearly 678,000 accounts. Describing these attacks as "very serious," he reiterated the government's apologies and stated that France was now facing cyberattacks of a new scale.
