Social leasing in Martinique: an offer limited to a single electric model

Social leasing, a scheme allowing low-income households to rent a new electric car at a reduced rate without an initial deposit, is showing disappointing results in Martinique . While this financial assistance mechanism has existed for three years in mainland France and was extended to the overseas territories on July 7th, eligible Martinicans are facing an extremely limited selection. Only one dealership currently offers a single electric model under this program intended to facilitate access to clean mobility.

A promising system hampered by local supply

This situation contrasts sharply with the initial ambitions expressed when the program was launched overseas. Socialist MP Jiovanny William hailed the accessibility of social leasing in Martinique, Guadeloupe , and French Guiana this summer as a step forward for low-income workers. The principle remains attractive: renting an electric or hybrid vehicle at an affordable rate thanks to government assistance, renewed since July 16th subject to income and mileage requirements. However, the lack of competition among distributors drastically limits the choices available to potential beneficiaries.

The limited availability of vehicles raises questions about the program's suitability for the specific needs of France's overseas territories. Logistical constraints, the local automotive market, and charging infrastructure all present obstacles hindering manufacturers' participation in the program. As a result, eligible households in Martinique remain deprived of the diverse range of models available to mainland beneficiaries of social leasing.
