Google's artificial intelligence assistant Gemini has surpassed one billion monthly users, announced Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, on Tuesday. It becomes the company's fourteenth product to reach this milestone, after recording 950 million users at the end of July.

In just one year, Gemini's monthly users have tripled. Sundar Pichai now presents the assistant as the fastest-growing product in Google's history. This growth is largely due to its integration into the group's ecosystem, from the search engine to Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube.

Massive integration compensates for the technological lag

This audience represents a major asset for Google, especially as its new flagship model, the Gemini 3.5 Pro, is still awaited. Initially announced for June, it has not yet been launched, while OpenAI and Anthropic have presented several models considered more powerful, particularly in computer code generation.

Google also reorganized its artificial intelligence division. Demis Hassabis stepped down from the day-to-day management of Google DeepMind, and several key researchers left the company, including Jeff Dean, after 27 years. This restructuring caused Google's stock to fall by about 4% on August 5.

ChatGPT's dominance is beginning to erode.

OpenAI also claimed one billion active users across all its interfaces, primarily ChatGPT, without specifying the time period used for this calculation. However, the American company built this audience in less than four years from a new application, while Google can distribute Gemini through services already used by several billion people.

Competition among artificial intelligence assistants is intensifying. According to Sensor Tower, ChatGPT's market share fell below 50% in the first half of 2026 due to the growth of Gemini, Claude, and DeepSeek. Google must now convert its vast distribution capacity into a sustainable technological and commercial advantage.
