A major mine-clearing operation is being organized on Thursday, August 20, off the coast of Nartelle beach in Sainte-Maxime, Var. This follows the discovery at sea of a World War II-era shell, located near the shore. Specialists are expected to secure and then neutralize the device in the morning.
An 800-meter protection perimeter has been established around the affected area. Between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., residents and businesses must remain indoors. Instructions include closing shutters while leaving windows open to minimize the risk of broken glass in the event of an explosion.
Traffic disrupted near La Nartelle
Roads near the beach are closed for the duration of the operation. Access to the coastline and navigation in the area may also be temporarily restricted. The necessary orders have been issued to allow bomb disposal experts to operate without endangering the public.
The municipality acknowledges the constraints caused by this operation during the peak tourist season. However, it maintains that these measures are essential to prevent an uncontrolled explosion of the shell near the shore. The lockdown will be lifted and access will be reopened only after the area has been fully secured.
