A murder investigation has been opened following the discovery of a woman's body in a nursing home in Rennes. The resident was found Sunday evening in her room by staff members, in circumstances that have led authorities to consider the possibility of third-party involvement.
The 82-year-old victim was found in bed with a pillow over her face. The woman was disabled and unable to move around independently. These initial findings led to the opening of a criminal investigation, although the precise sequence of events has not yet been established.
The cause of death remains uncertain.
Initial forensic examinations, however, revealed no obvious signs of suffocation or strangulation. The presence of the pillow alone is therefore insufficient to determine the cause of death. Anatomopathological analyses must now be carried out to look for any injuries or abnormalities that were not apparent during the initial examination.
The investigation will also need to reconstruct the resident's last hours, verify the conditions under which her room was accessible, and interview those present in the facility at the time of the discovery. The classification of murder of a vulnerable person allows investigators to conduct a thorough investigation, but it does not mean that homicide has already been established. The medical findings will be crucial in confirming or ruling out foul play.
