A 32-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, August 15, in Valréas, Vaucluse, after the discovery of his mother's body at her home. Taken into custody by the gendarmerie, the suspect confessed to the crime during questioning, according to information released by the Carpentras prosecutor's office.
Military personnel from the Valréas territorial brigade responded around 4:00 a.m. after being alerted by another son of the victim. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of the 52-year-old woman. A knife, possibly used in the incident, was recovered and placed under seal for analysis by investigators.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
An examination by a doctor from the Nîmes forensic institute revealed a deep wound to the throat, as well as several other injuries to the neck and face. The prosecutor's office specifies that the suspect is under judicial protection in the form of guardianship. The investigation will notably need to determine his condition at the time of the events, the sequence of events, and the possible existence of a family dispute.
