A resident of Villejuif was the victim of a theft by impersonation on Thursday, August 13, at his home. Around 11 a.m., a man claiming to be a water company employee appeared at the gate of his house, stating that there had been a water outage. After gaining permission to enter the property, he allegedly took advantage of the situation to steal several items.
Moments later, two other men posing as police officers arrived. They staged the arrest of the supposed water company employee, who was actually their accomplice, in order to gain the homeowner's trust. The fake officials then mentioned a court-ordered seizure and convinced the victim to hand over the key to his safe.
Two thousand collector's items taken away
The safe contained approximately 2,000 collectibles, including 160 Napoleon coins. After seizing the entire collection, the three thieves fled. The total loss is estimated at over €110,000. The scheme employed relied on precise organization, with each member of the group playing a role designed to reassure the victim and divert their attention.
Several similar robberies have recently been reported in the Paris region. In January, an 80-year-old woman in Nogent-sur-Marne was robbed of jewelry estimated at €400,000 by individuals using a similar method. A few days earlier, a man posing as a plumber and another as a police officer had also deceived an elderly woman in Paris, causing losses exceeding €200,000.
