Gérald Darmanin will not be a candidate in the 2027 presidential election. The Minister of Justice announced on Monday, August 17, that he had chosen to support Édouard Philippe, calling on the other contenders in his camp to avoid division.
Gérald Darmanin has made his decision. While his name had been circulating for several months among the possible candidates for the 2027 presidential election, the Minister of Justice announced that he would ultimately not be running and that he would support Édouard Philippe.
In an interview with La Voix du Nord , the Minister of Justice explained his choice by his desire to avoid exacerbating divisions within his own party. "We are in an extremely difficult situation, a socially difficult one for the French people," he stated, before announcing his decision to support the former Prime Minister.
Gérald Darmanin also hopes that other political leaders likely to run will adopt the same approach and rally behind the candidacy of the president of Horizons.
Édouard Philippe expected in Tourcoing
This announcement comes just days before Gérald Darmanin's political comeback, scheduled for August 30 in Tourcoing. Édouard Philippe is expected to be present at this event, giving particular significance to the rapprochement between the two men.
Having already declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, the former Prime Minister has thus secured significant support within the current majority. By renouncing his own presidential ambitions, Gérald Darmanin is also helping to further clarify the political landscape of the central bloc as the election approaches.
