The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday approved Jay Clayton's nomination as Director of National Intelligence by a vote of nine to eight, despite opposition from Democrats.
The vote was close: nine for, eight against. The Senate Intelligence Committee nevertheless approved Jay Clayton's nomination to lead the U.S. intelligence community, paving the way for a full Senate review.
Donald Trump had nominated Clayton last month to fill the position of Director of National Intelligence (DNI), following the departure of Tulsi Gabbard. Clayton currently serves as the chief federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, one of the most influential federal prosecutor's offices in the country.
Democrats expressed their opposition to the nomination, but were unable to block its progress in committee. The nomination must now be submitted to a vote by the full Senate for confirmation.
