Megafires: Nine out of ten fires start with human intervention

These large-scale fires mobilize considerable resources every summer and ravage thousands of hectares. The expert emphasizes a damning fact: nine out of ten fires originate from human activity, whether intentional or accidental.

Overwhelming human responsibility

The figures confirm that nature alone rarely triggers these disasters. Poorly discarded cigarette butts, illegal barbecues, agricultural or forestry work, faulty power lines: the causes are numerous. This overwhelming proportion of human responsibility necessitates collective reflection on risky behaviors, especially during periods of drought.

The researcher's intervention aims to raise public awareness of a phenomenon that is intensifying with climate change. Prevention remains the primary means of limiting the outbreak of fires, far more so than aerial or ground firefighting resources. Authorities reiterate vigilance guidelines every season, but they are not always able to reverse the trend.
