Tamayo Perry has died. If that name doesn't mean anything to you, this 49-year-old is a surfing legend. Icon in Hawaii, where he was born and where he lived, he succumbed to his injuries after being attacked by a shark.

The news plunged surfing fans into immense sadness. An accident was reported around 13 p.m. this Sunday, when tourists saw a man off shore suffering from “ deep shark bites ". Malaekahana Beach rescue workers immediately brought him back to dry land. But he was already too late. The medical staff could only note the death of Tamayo Perry.

No other information on the circumstances of the tragedy has yet been released.

The surfer was also a rescue swimmer on Honolulu beaches. Became famous after his appearances in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Fountain of Youth, Charlie's Angels: The Angels Are Unleashed! and Blue Crush, this sportsman died while practicing his favorite hobby.

In his last Instagram posts, Tamayo Perry recently wrote about all the fun he could have taming the ocean. He also loved sharing his messages of peace. Hundreds of messages from fans are pouring into the comments of his latest photos.

Surfers, swimmers and divers account for 94% of (unprovoked) shark attacks. Most bites come from three species: great white sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks.

The risk of being killed by a shark is 1 in 4,3 million, according to the latest statistics. Totally ridiculous figure but very real, on average per year, only 6 people die as a result of a shark attack.
