Since the beginning of June, 1,587 people have been imprisoned in connection with proceedings related to sexual violence against minors. This new figure represents 163 additional detentions since the previous update released on August 4th by the Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin.
At the same time, approximately 2,100 judicial investigations have been opened and assigned to investigating judges since June 8. Around one hundred new proceedings have thus been initiated in two weeks. These figures are the result of the national review of complaints and reports relating to sexual violence committed against children.
A mobilization triggered after Lyhanna's death
On June 8, Gérald Darmanin asked all public prosecutors to re-examine cases concerning minors, particularly complaints that had been dismissed, insufficiently processed, or left unanswered. This nationwide operation was launched after the death of Lyhanna, an 11-year-old middle school student found dead in the Gers region at the beginning of June.
Jérôme Barella, charged with the rape and murder of the girl, had previously been the subject of several complaints for sexual offenses against minors, but was never prosecuted. This case has highlighted potential shortcomings in the handling and processing of legal proceedings. Those currently implicated or detained remain presumed innocent until proven guilty.
