Investigative services have launched a major review of child sexual abuse complaints, now encompassing nearly 88,000 reports, the Justice Minister announced. This number has risen sharply in recent weeks, particularly following a high-profile case that highlighted shortcomings in the handling of certain cases.
Among these cases, several thousand concern criminal offenses for which a suspect has already been identified. The stated objective is to conduct a thorough review of these cases by mid-July, in order to assess their progress and identify any shortcomings.
A tense legal response
This work comes amid strong criticism of the judicial system, accused of lacking sufficient resources to effectively handle these cases. The Minister of Justice himself acknowledges a delay in addressing violence against minors, despite progress made in addressing violence against women.
The minister also defends a reform of the criminal justice system currently being debated in Parliament, which aims in particular to expedite the handling of sexual crimes. The plan specifically includes expanding the departmental criminal courts, which are tasked with prioritizing rape cases, in a context of persistent court backlogs.
