Bottled water plays a significant role in French consumption habits, particularly for its taste, convenience, and desired mineral composition. However, it is not a uniform category. Regulations distinguish between natural mineral water, spring water, and water made potable through treatment. All are considered foodstuffs and are subject to health inspections covering the source, bottling facilities, and the product itself.
Natural mineral water must originate from a protected underground source and is characterized by a stable mineral composition. Spring water also comes from an underground aquifer, but it must meet the same physicochemical requirements as tap water. Finally, treated drinking water can come from an underground or surface source and undergo processes similar to those used to produce water distributed through public networks.
A composition to look at before choosing
Not all waters are suitable for daily and exclusive consumption. Some mineral waters are rich in calcium or magnesium, while others contain more sodium, sulfates, or bicarbonates. Highly mineralized water can meet occasional needs, but regular consumption should be adjusted according to health status, diet, and medical recommendations, particularly in cases of hypertension, kidney disease, or digestive disorders.
The label indicates the water's origin, mineral composition, and best-before date. For infants, choose water specifically labeled as suitable for preparing baby food. An opened bottle used for a baby bottle should be refrigerated and consumed promptly. Carbonated water, which is too high in minerals or carbon dioxide, is not suitable for this purpose.
The bottle must be stored properly.
A bottle of water should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from light. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or high heat, especially in a car during the summer, can alter the taste and cause certain components from the container to leach into the water. Once opened, the bottle should be resealed, kept refrigerated, and consumed quickly, especially if several people are drinking directly from the bottle.
Disposable bottles are not designed for long-term use as water bottles. Repeated reuse, deformation, and insufficient cleaning can lead to micro-cracks and bacterial growth. For everyday use, a glass or stainless steel water bottle is a more durable solution. However, it should still be washed regularly with a suitable brush to remove any biological deposits that may form on its surface.
Microplastics and waste are at the heart of concerns
Microplastics have been detected in both bottled and tap water. Current scientific knowledge does not yet allow us to precisely determine the long-term effects of this exposure on human health. This uncertainty justifies continued research, but it does not mean that bottled water presents an immediate danger when it meets health standards and is stored under normal conditions.
The most well-established impact remains environmental. The manufacturing of bottles, their transport, refrigeration, and post-use processing all consume energy and generate waste. In France, only 58,3% of plastic beverage bottles were collected in 2024, far short of European targets. When the mains water supply is potable and not subject to any local restrictions, tap water generally remains the least expensive and least packaging-intensive option. Bottled water, however, retains its usefulness when traveling, in emergency situations, or when some people require a specific mineral composition.
