Bruno Retailleau believes a primary will likely be necessary in early 2027 to decide between the right-wing and centrist candidates for the presidential election. Appearing on BFMTV on Tuesday, November 3, the leader of the Republicans called for a clarification of the candidacies, while Édouard Philippe continues to reject this method of selection.

Bruno Retailleau has shifted his stance on holding a primary before the 2027 presidential election. Interviewed Tuesday evening on BFMTV , the Republican candidate suggested that such a vote would likely be necessary to decide between the various figures vying for the presidency. "I think that, as things stand, a primary will probably be needed at the beginning of the year," he stated. The former Minister of the Interior believes that current opinion polls do not yet allow for the emergence of a unified candidacy. He specifically mentioned an Ifop poll published Tuesday for LCI, in which the four figures he hopes to unite remain below 10% of voting intentions in the scenario studied. This situation, he argues, compels leaders of the right and center to consider a joint nomination process.

The leader of the Republicans party wants a primary election bringing together four candidates: himself, Édouard Philippe (president of Horizons), Gabriel Attal (secretary general of Renaissance), and David Lisnard (mayor of Cannes and president of Nouvelle Énergie). Lisnard has been advocating for an open competition for several months, while Attal recently called for a primary among democratic parties. Bruno Retailleau now believes that such a consultation could be the way to narrow down the candidates before the first round. However, he warned that in the absence of an agreement, he would maintain his own candidacy until the end. This statement reflects the difficulties faced by the various political leaders in defining a common strategy, as each intends to defend their own platform and positioning.

Édouard Philippe remains opposed to a primary

The main obstacle remains Édouard Philippe's refusal. Invited on TF1 on Sunday, the former Prime Minister reaffirmed his opposition to a primary, which he considers a potential source of division and confusion. Bruno Retailleau believes, however, that the president of Horizons might reconsider his position in the coming months. The LR candidate wants to limit the competition to the four figures already committed, in order to allow for in-depth discussions on their proposals. He specifically excludes Raphaël Glucksmann , believing that this consultation should remain focused on right-wing and centrist parties. Significant differences remain among the potential participants, particularly regarding institutions, Europe, immigration, and economic policy. Organizing a primary would also require an agreement on its procedures, timeline, and voter participation requirements.

Pending a possible joint decision, Bruno Retailleau is proposing three major televised debates before the end of the year. These debates, broadcast on three different channels, would focus on purchasing power, core government functions, and environmental issues. The stated objective is to allow the French public to compare the candidates' proposals and better understand their differences. This initiative comes as the various contenders seek to increase their visibility a few months before the presidential election. For Bruno Retailleau, a primary could clarify the political landscape and prevent a proliferation of competing candidacies. It remains to be seen whether Édouard Philippe will agree to participate in this consultation. At this stage, no date or official procedure has been established for organizing a joint primary in early 2027.
