Rédoine Faïd will not be transferred to the Valence prison in the Drôme region after all. The Caen court of appeals overturned the decision ordering his transfer from the Condé-sur-Sarthe prison in the Orne region. The repeat armed robber will therefore remain incarcerated in this high-security facility.
On August 7, the judge responsible for sentencing in Alençon ruled that the prisoner's conditions of detention were contrary to human dignity. The public prosecutor's office immediately appealed this decision. The appeals court ultimately determined that the corrective measures implemented by the prison administration had sufficiently improved Rédoine Faïd's conditions of detention.
An inmate placed under maximum surveillance
Nicknamed the "king of the escape," Rédoine Faïd is known for two particularly spectacular prison breaks. In 2013, he left Sequedin prison after using explosives and taking several people hostage. Five years later, he escaped by helicopter from Réau prison before being apprehended after three months on the run.
The inmate has been incarcerated in Condé-sur-Sarthe since 2025, after having been held at the Vendin-le-Vieil prison in Pas-de-Calais. His conditions of detention at the previous facility were also deemed contrary to human dignity, due to their duration, the combination of these conditions, and the lack of concrete prospects for improvement. His lawyer did not immediately comment on the new decision, as he had not yet been informed of it.
