A man in his forties died on Sunday, August 16, after being seriously injured in a brawl the previous day in Compiègne, in the Oise region. Three people—a 20-year-old man and two women aged 18 and 33—were taken into custody as part of the investigation.
Police intervened around 5:40 a.m. on Saturday in a city square after being alerted to a fight. The victim was found in the street with severe head injuries. Rushed to the Compiègne hospital in critical condition, she succumbed to her injuries Sunday morning.
The charges have been reclassified as homicide.
The three suspects were initially taken into custody for attempted homicide. Following the death of the man in his forties, the charges were changed to homicide and complicity in homicide. According to a police source cited by AFP, the 18-year-old woman had previously been sexually assaulted by the victim. This detail will need to be verified during the investigation and placed within the precise sequence of events.
The three individuals in custody are to be brought before an investigating judge in Senlis on Monday as part of a judicial inquiry opened for murder, complicity in murder, and failure to assist a person in danger. The Compiègne public prosecutor's office, which will be relinquishing the case, has announced that it will request their pretrial detention. At this stage, the respective responsibilities of the suspects remain to be established.
