It's a new record! David Gilmour's Black Stratocaster guitar, from Pink Floyd, was auctioned for a staggering $14,5 million, an unprecedented price for a guitar. The sale was organized by Christie's auction house in New York.

An iconic guitar

For the uninitiated, the Black Strat is a 1969 Fender Stratocaster that David Gilmour bought in the early 1970s. The musician used it for decades, notably during the recording of several iconic Pink Floyd albums. This guitar helped shape the sound of cult tracks such as Money ou Comfortably Numbwhose solo is often considered one of the greatest in rock history.

With a final price of $14,5 million, the Black Stratocaster became the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction. It far surpassed the previous record held by the acoustic guitar used by Kurt Cobain during the concert. MTV Unplugged from Nirvana, sold for approximately $6 million in 2020.
