Iran conducted a series of ballistic and cruise missile tests against simulated targets in the Gulf on Friday, as part of a two-day military exercise overseen by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' navy. According to state media, the maneuvers were intended to demonstrate Tehran's ability to respond to potential "foreign threats" in a region where geopolitical tensions remain particularly high.

The exercises showcase Iran's strike capabilities as the country seeks to demonstrate its military power to its regional and Western adversaries. The Gulf is regularly the scene of incidents involving military vessels or oil tankers, and Iran insists that these maneuvers are intended to strengthen its defense and deterrence.

Earlier this week, Iran conducted a counterterrorism exercise in East Azerbaijan province, in cooperation with members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. According to Press TV, the maneuvers were intended to send a message of "peace and friendship" to neighboring countries, while also warning potential adversaries that "any miscalculation would be met with a decisive response."

These successive exercises illustrate Tehran's desire to consolidate its military influence while strengthening its regional and international alliances. They also come amid persistent tensions with the United States and several Middle Eastern powers, while negotiations on various sensitive issues, particularly nuclear matters, remain stalled.
