This weekend, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a tragic helicopter accident in the Jolfa region, in the province of East Azerbaijan. Raisi, accompanied by several senior officials, was traveling to Azerbaijan to inaugurate the Qiz Qalasi Dam, a collaborative project between Iran and Azerbaijan on the Araxes River. This accident is unfortunately not an isolated case in the history of heads of state.
The Bell 212 helicopter was carrying nine people, including Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the governor of East Azerbaijan province Malek Rahmati and the representative of the Supreme Leader in East Azerbaijan Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem. Two other helicopters served as escort. Reported missing, the aircraft was found the next morning, 2 km southwest of Khunirud, without any signs of life. State television IRIB and other media outlets confirmed the death of the Iranian president, leaving Mohammad Mokhber, the first vice president, to serve as interim president.
