The UN Security Council met in New York on Monday, June 8, to discuss maintaining peace and security in Ukraine. The Ukrainian permanent representative used the session to urge member states to adopt a series of sanctions against the Russian war machine. This meeting comes as the Council is addressing the conflict for the fourth time in two weeks, reflecting an intensification of diplomatic tensions surrounding the Ukrainian issue.
Kyiv demands Moscow's exclusion
Beyond sanctions, Kyiv is going further in its demands. Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine's ambassador to the United Nations, called on member states to find a political and legal mechanism to strip Moscow of its permanent seat on the Security Council. This demand is based on Russian aggression against Ukraine and systematic crimes committed against civilians, according to the Ukrainian delegation. Recent Security Council meetings have notably addressed the incursion of a Russian drone carrying explosives into Romanian airspace in late May, an incident strongly condemned by Bucharest.
Calls for de-escalation
The UN Secretary-General used these repeated sessions to urge an immediate and lasting de-escalation. He called for a complete and unconditional ceasefire and for more diplomacy to resolve the conflict. The Security Council also met in emergency session at Russia's request following allegations of an attack on a university residence in Starobilsk, in the Luhansk region. The increasing number of meetings reflects the protracted nature of the conflict and the Council's inability to impose a diplomatic solution.
