Cameroonian President Paul Biya has not been seen in public since his departure for Switzerland on June 7. These fifty days of absence have heightened political tensions in Yaoundé.
Paul Biya left Cameroon on June 7th. Since then, the 93-year-old head of state, who has been in power for almost 44 years, has given no visible sign of activity. This exceptionally long stay in Switzerland has now become a central topic in the Cameroonian media and among the political class.
The opposition makes no secret of its concern. It denounces a country left on "autopilot," without visible leadership or publicly acknowledged presidential decisions. The question of governance in the president's prolonged absence fuels debates about the concentration of power and the opacity of institutions.
The Cameroonian presidency is adopting a conciliatory tone. Official services have sought to reassure the public, without, however, providing any details on the president's state of health or the expected date of his return to the country.
