The judicial scandal targeting Patrick Bruel The case against the singer has taken a new turn with the filing of two new rape and sexual assault complaints. These bring the total number of complaints filed against him to 31. One of the new complainants alleges a rape that occurred in the fall of 1994. The second claims to have been sexually assaulted during a film shoot in 2005. These two cases add to the numerous files already being examined by the courts. Of the 31 complaints, 14 concern offenses currently considered time-barred. However, investigating judges must examine each case individually to determine whether any legal rules or prior procedures may have interrupted or extended the statute of limitations.
Four charges still pending
To date, Patrick Bruel has been formally charged in four separate cases involving accusations of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. The alleged offenses took place between 2008 and 2019. In addition, four other proceedings have led to his being placed under the status of assisted witness. This status means that evidence exists in these cases, but it is deemed insufficient, at this stage of the investigation, to justify formal charges.
A particularly strict judicial control
Since being formally charged on June 10, Patrick Bruel has remained free under judicial supervision. The obligations imposed on him are numerous. He is notably prohibited from leaving French territory or contacting the plaintiffs and their families. He must also pay bail of €500,000, provide proof of psychological treatment, and refrain from frequenting massage parlors. The judge in charge of pre-trial detention refused to place him in custody, deeming judicial supervision a sufficient measure at this stage of the proceedings.
New complaints filed since June
Since the start of this phase of the investigation, several other women have filed complaints. In late June and early July, three new complaints had already been filed, two for rape and one for sexual assault of a minor. Another rape complaint, submitted to the investigating judges on June 24, concerns events that the complainant places in the early 2000s when she was 16 years old. In this case, the statute of limitations may not apply due to the specific rules governing sexual crimes committed against minors.
The judges are continuing their investigations.
The magistrates will now continue hearing from the various parties, comparing their accounts of the events and analyzing the testimonies as well as any available physical evidence. At the conclusion of the investigation, several outcomes are possible: dismissal of the case if the evidence is deemed insufficient, or referral to a trial court if the magistrates believe the evidence gathered justifies a trial.
Patrick Bruel denies the accusations
Patrick Bruel denies all the charges against him. His lawyers denounce the accusations as unfounded and contest the various complaints filed against their client. At this stage of the proceedings, despite the number of complaints filed and the ongoing investigations, Patrick Bruel benefits from the presumption of innocence.
