The United States further strengthens its sanctions against Cuba

Washington has announced a new round of sanctions against nine Cuban entities, including the Ministry of Construction. The targeted entities operate primarily in the mining and metallurgical sectors. US authorities accuse them of contributing to the financing of the Cuban repressive apparatus through their control of strategic economic sectors.

Officials from the Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples are also implicated in these measures. The United States suspects this organization of participating in the creation of a network tasked with recruiting and radicalizing militants on American soil under the guise of educational and cultural exchanges. Havana did not immediately respond to these accusations.

A maximum pressure policy

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also criticized the Cuban government for using the centennial of Fidel Castro's birth to host another delegation of foreign sympathizers. Washington maintains that these visitors were tasked with establishing contacts with regime officials. This initiative is part of the ideological battle waged by the Trump administration against Cuban communism.

Since January, the United States has also imposed a de facto oil blockade on Cuba, exacerbating energy shortages and power outages on the island. Several sanctions have already targeted Gaesa, the powerful conglomerate controlled by the Cuban military. Donald Trump considers Cuba a threat to American national security and maintains a strategy aimed at economically isolating the regime.
