The USS George Washington has joined the operational area of the U.S. Military Command for the Middle East. This aircraft carrier is replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been at sea for more than eight months. This deployment comes at a time when regional tensions remain particularly high.
The Abraham Lincoln left San Diego in November 2025 for a mission initially planned for the South China Sea. The ship was subsequently redirected to the Middle East before the start of the American and Israeli offensive against Iran on February 28. Its return had been demanded for several weeks by the families of crew members.
Living conditions heavily criticized
American elected officials and relatives of sailors denounced the difficult conditions encountered aboard the Abraham Lincoln. Food shortages, mental health problems, and several suicide attempts were among the allegations. The American administration, however, maintained that the situation had been exaggerated.
The replacement of the aircraft carrier should allow the crew to return to the United States after an exceptionally long mission. However, the arrival of the George Washington leaves the US Navy, at least temporarily, without an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. This absence could benefit China, as Washington and Beijing continue their strategic competition in the region.
