The mayor of Chaumont, Antoine Desfretier, was found with serious head injuries Tuesday evening in his vehicle near Rolampont, in the Haute-Marne department. The 50-year-old elected official was reportedly shot, but the precise circumstances of the incident remain unknown. His condition is no longer considered life-threatening.
Around 23:30 p.m., Antoine Desfretier himself contacted emergency services to report his injury and provide his location. Firefighters and a mobile intensive care unit (SMUR) team took charge of him before his transfer to the University Hospital of Dijon. The possible presence of a firearm near the vehicle has not been confirmed.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the injury.
The Chaumont public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the causes of the serious injuries. The investigation will notably seek to determine whether it was an accident, a deliberate act, or the involvement of another person. At this stage, no hypothesis is being officially favored.
The municipality of Chaumont confirmed the mayor's hospitalization and indicated that his life was not in danger. While he recovers, elected officials and municipal services are continuing their work. Antoine Desfretier is also president of the Chaumont metropolitan area.
