Donald Trump claimed that the families of the sailors deployed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln were not worried about the ship's extended deployment, calling its 250 days at sea "far from sufficient." However, relatives of crew members had publicly expressed their concerns about this record deployment, given that the aircraft carrier is mobilized as part of the US mission against Iran.
The president did, however, confirm that the USS George Washington would relieve the Abraham Lincoln in this theater of operations. This announcement comes as the exceptionally long deployment had fueled growing controversy, with sailors' families challenging the optimistic version presented by the White House.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration filed an appeal with the Supreme Court seeking permission to continue construction of a ballroom integrated into the East Wing of the White House. In its brief, it describes the court injunction halting the project as "extraordinary and unlawful," citing national security imperatives to justify the project.
An appeals court had previously blocked construction of the above-ground sections, while allowing the continuation of underground work related to security infrastructure. It is precisely this distinction that the administration is seeking to have overturned before the country's highest court.
