SFR confirmed on Thursday, August 20, that it had been the victim of a cyberattack that exposed the personal data of some of its fiber subscribers. The incident, detected on July 2 by the operator's security teams, allowed temporary access to various pieces of information associated with the affected lines. The total number of affected customers has not been disclosed.
The hackers potentially obtained subscribers' names, postal addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers. SFR, however, maintains that passwords and banking information were not compromised during the intrusion. The first notification letters were sent to affected individuals starting in mid-August.
A targeted connection management tool
The cyberattack targeted a tool used to manage and analyze fiber optic network connections. Access to the affected area was cut off as soon as the incident was discovered, and additional security measures were deployed. SFR also reported the data breach to the French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) and filed a complaint with the public prosecutor.
Affected subscribers should now be particularly vigilant against fraudulent emails, calls, or messages that may use the stolen information. This attack comes two years after a previous data breach at SFR, which compromised the bank details of some customers. It is part of a growing trend of cyberattacks targeting both private companies and French government agencies.
