Algeria elects a woman as head of Parliament for the first time

This is a first in Algerian political history. Khalida Boufedeche, from the National Liberation Front (FLN), has been elected president of Parliament, a position held exclusively by men since the country's independence.

Her accession to this position marks a strong symbolic break, but the context remains contrasting: women represent only 6% of Algerian parliamentarians, a rate among the lowest in the region.

Boufedeche's election therefore raises a fundamental question about the real scope of this progress, in an institution where female representation remains very marginal.
